It’s time to say goodbye to summer, and hello to September: the month of changing leaves, back-to-school parties, and perfect weather. In New York, the transition from the dog-days of summer to the first days of autumn brings a slew of outdoor fairs, festivals and markets. As the days begin to cool down, residents and visitors gather to celebrate the changing seasons and take advantage of final days of sunshine. Here’s a roundup of our favorite gatherings happening this month.
In 2005, the first ever Vendy Awards was held to celebrate and acknowledge the best street food vendors in New York City. Fourteen years later, the Vendy Awards prepares to host its final competition on September 21st, 2019. This year, thousands of guests will gather on Governor’s Island to sample food from the publicly nominated vendors in various categories. The winners, who are chosen by attendees and by a panel of celebrity judges, will undoubtedly reflect the rich diversity of the city’s culinary life. And if eating delicious food isn’t enough to make this unique event appealing, know that all profits from the event’s ticket sales will go towards the Street Vendor Project, a local non-profit advocating for vendors’ rights. Join for a day of great food, served with a side of social justice.
No autumnal festival season would be complete without a trip to Oktoberfest. If you love beer, Germany, and giant pretzels, be sure to grab your lederhosen and dirndls and head to this year’s celebration on Pier 15. Located just a twenty-minute walk away from The Wagner, you’ll feel free to have your fill of authentic German beer. Weightlifters or pilates-fiends may even try their luck at the famed stein holding contests. Whatever your game plan, be sure to RSVP to one of the six celebratory weekends ahead of time.
Influencers, artists and museum-goers alike will enjoy Photoville’s immersive photography experience, taking place this year from September 12th through the 22nd in Brooklyn Bridge’s picturesque plaza. Photoville returns for its eighth year of outdoor exhibits, workshops and artist-led tours. The free event includes nightly shows and programming, as well as food and drink vendors from Smorgasburg.
Honor your inner yogi at this year’s Wanderlust event in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. With events beginning at 7:30am, participants can join in a 5K Run or Walk, a DJ-powered yoga flow class, a mindful triathlon consisting of 30-minute soul reviving meditation, Aerial Yoga, Hooping, AcroYoga, Tarot 101 and Bodywork. Bring your stretchiest pants and prepare for a day of physical and mindful work.
Bookworms unite! Brooklyn’s Book Festival is the largest free literary event in New York City. The festival features exciting works from national and international literary stars as well as emerging authors. Find your next favorite novel at the outdoor literary marketplace, or attend one of the many scheduled literary interviews with authors like Mo Willems, Mira Jacob and Marlon James. The festival takes place on September 16th through the 23rd at locations throughout the city. All you need to attend is an open mind and a love of the written word.
