The Best MLK Weekend Getaways Around New York

What is it about the three day weekend that feels endless? It’s something about that Sunday into Monday moment that makes the weekend seem so much longer, where anything could be a possibility, when there’s so much time to spend with your family or friends. New York is sandwiched between some amazing three day weekend destinations, all just a drive or train from Wagner Battery Park. Check ‘em out and tell those “Sunday Scaries” to come back another day.

Atlantic City: Sure the beach and the boardwalk might be all boarded up, but Atlantic City makes for a fun winter getaway and is just 90 minutes from lower Manhattan. Besides, we all know that the real action takes place indoors, from the fun cabaret shows, to the gambling to the stellar restaurants. Luxe hotels like the Borgata even feature an indoor pool to hang at as well as a decadent spa. So when you’re not winning big bucks at the craps table, you can find your zen elsewhere.

The Berkshires: Just over 100 miles from New York by car, the Berkshires is a quintessential winter experience, where the fun actually takes place outdoors. The region, located at the northern tip of New York and into Massachusetts, features some of the best skiing on the east coast at mountain resorts such as Jiminy Peak and Butternut. There’s also cross country skiing, tubing and snow-shoeing and hotels at every price point catering to the cold weather explorer. For those whose pursuits center around a warm fire and a good book, there’s plenty of that too – not to mention award-winning restaurants and fantastic antique shops to keep everyone busy.

The Poconos: At the eastern end of Pennsylvania sits a destination region that harkens back to the “Borscht Belt” era of family vacation travel. The Poconos is a wonderful area to explore and offers attractions aimed at every age. For those who enjoy outdoor adventure, Camelback is one of the east coast’s premier ski mountains, while gigantic resorts like Kalahari and Great Wolf Lodge keep everyone entertained indoors with mega waterparks, indoor bowling, ropes courses and non-stop fun for the very young to the old.

Bedford: This quaint town in the Hudson Valley gives new meaning to “winter charm.” It’s a virtual fairytale land, particularly come January when it’s quiet and covered in snow. Just 25 minutes outside of New York, it makes for a perfect long weekend trip, especially when you’re looking to take a break from the city and stretch your legs. For a romantic winter weekend, book stay at the Bedford Post Inn, where there’s nothing to do but eat and nap.
